UDL Files for easy checking of SQL Server Connections

UDL, Universal Data Link, is an interface for specifying and connecting to a data provider. Confused 😕 ? That means using this interface you can test a SQL server connection is working fine or not. But where can we use this effectively?

You can use UDL effectively, when you have more number of data connections and in a scenario when you need to check all of those working as expected. Follow these steps to try UDL.

1. Create a new file with extension .udl

2. Double click on that file, you will be presented with an interface with many tabs starting with Provider. Select the most appropriate one on that. If you’ve a SQL server then the provider would be Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server. Click Next.

3. In Connection tab, enter the server name or click refresh to get the available server instances. Enter the credentials, that has access to that server and select database if needed. Click on Test Connection to check whether the connection is working as expected or not.

If you have multiple instances or servers, you only need to choose from the list of servers available, or need to enter the server names manually. Using UDL is very easy and simple when compared with connecting to a server using SQL Management Studio. Check it and feel the difference 🙂 .
